Carpets act as giant filters for workplace air, collecting and trapping pollutants and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—carbon-based chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature. Some VOCs are harmless, but many are irritants that can cause headaches, eye or throat irritation, dizziness and aggravated allergies or asthma. Long-term exposure to VOCs can lead to more serious health issues.
